What a great weekend and a fun time spent with family and friends. Matt H., Grayson and myself left Friday evening about 5:30 and headed to Mississippi. We met dad around 10 that evening at the motel. (I use that term loosely...if you ever get the chance to stay at The Rolling Fork Motel, do so at your own risk) We unloaded, got settled and checked the camera cards that had been out. The Rat Hole camera was full of deer and bucks, but we elected to stick with the plan of hunting the 3 Way Saturday morning and then slipping into the Rat Hole Saturday afternoon. Grayson was so excited about the next day and he kept saying, "I'm too excited to go to sleep" as he jumped around the room. It also could have been that he slept the enitre 4 hours on our way over. Needless to say, none of us got much sleep Friday night. Myself, Grayson and Pop-Pop made it to the 3 Way right at daylight Sat morning and got settled in. About 6:30 I looked out the window Grayson was supposed to be watching and saw the butt end of a deer in a hurried walk away from the stand. I then moved my eyes to the head and saw a rack. The buck had walked out only 30 yards from the stand but had obviously sensed something wasn't right. He didn't stick around long but it was great to see him and it got us all on high alert for the rest of the morning. I believe the buck at the top (Unibrow) is the one that snuck out on us. Unfortunately that was the only deer we saw all morning. Matt hunted the pecan ladder and saw 2 does and had another deer blow at him. The SE wind was not favorable for that stand, but we did the best we could. We spent mid day fertilizing all the fields and trimming limbs around the stands. Saturday afternoon Grayson and I got set up in the Rat Hole and were both sweating profusely. It was HOT! The action was pretty slow most of the afternoon but we did manage to have 3 slip into the field off and on throughout the sit. Matt hunted the Oak Ladder but didn't see a single deer. We got a quick dinner (Chuck's in Rolling Fork...definitely worth stopping to eat at) and made it back in time to watch LSU/State before we all went to sleep pretty easily. Sunday morning found Grayson and I back in the Rat Hole and Matt at the Pecan Ladder. Once again, the deer just didn't move. We didn't see anything but Matt did manage to get an arrow through a 100lb. doe that came through at 8:15. He made a great shot and we were able to claim his first bow kill after an easy 80 yard track job. Grayson really enjoyed the blood trailing and it was good to be able to teach him another facet of the hunting game. Congrats to Matt for getting his first with a stick and string and holding it together with a deer at less than 10 yards! I'm proud of you bro and it was a pleasure for both myself and Grayson to be there with you. A few pics from the weekend are above and I've also added pictures from the Rat Hole camera pull to the Trail Cam page.
