Heavy equipment operators, electricians, builders, plumbers...you name it, they've been at the farm over the past week or so. CC was a happy man to hop in the air conditioned cab and spend two days improving the #1 duck hole and fixing a few roads. One thing I'm excited about is that by knocking out the brush, we have added another 3 acres or so to the dove field. I've got big plans for a killer dove field next year now. The building erection has begun and we hope to have it plumbed and walled in by this time next week. We finally have rain in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday, so I have my fingers crossed the seed we put out in early September (which has been covered) will still germinate and we'll have some decent bow plots. We will wait until first part of October to plant the 18 acres of big fields. Less than two weeks to opening day of bow season, and I haven't even formulated my hit list yet. I'll be going in blind for the most part on bucks, and that is bad news for the first 3 1/2 year old+ that strolls through! It's been 4 years since I've shot a buck, and I'm a bit trigger happy to say the least. I am very anxious to check the cameras, as we should have a good number of mature bucks on the farm and surrounding properties. 13 Days!!! ________________________________________________________________

One word: HOT. It was 98 when we got out of the truck. I had
planned for this and set up a beach tent next to a tree and brushed it in as best I could. Apparently the doves weren't impressed. They avoided it like the plague. We took it down around 4:30 and the action quickly heated up. My two boys combined to shoot 2 boxes, quite a feat with a single shot (by the way...when did .410 shells get so dang expensive) and pulled the feathers off one bird. Dad limited out and I was able to add 7 to the pile in between the boys shooting. I only pulled the trigger about a dozen times. We knocked down 3 that fell into a grown up area and were unable to find. As it cooled off, we got Delta (dad's lab) out of the truck and she found all three...not bad for her first true field work. Great day spent with family enjoying all of God's blessings. |
